In the early 19th century, Thornton commissioned renowned artists of the time, such as Philip Reinagle, Abraham Pether, and Peter Henderson, to create the stunning illustrations for his masterpiece The Temple of Flora, as well as his octavo-sized publications Elements of Botany and British Flora.
The Temple of Flora is a lavish and ambitious botanical book featuring illustrations of flowers by various artists. It is considered one of the most beautiful and extravagant botanical publications of its time. The botanicals are richly colored and often depicted flowers in mythological or allegorical settings, reflecting Thornton’s poetic and romantic vision of botany.
Robert John Thornton was a British physician, botanical writer, and publisher known for his significant contributions to the field of botany during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Thornton’s contributions to botany and botanical art endure as a testament to his passion for the natural world and his vision of blending scientific study with artistic expression.
